Introduction

The Azelis Laboratory has screened NXT SOLV 100, 200, & 300, bio-derived ketal ester solvents produced by NXTLEVVEL. These solvents have been presented to be effective zero VOC coalescing solvents for the CASE market. This is achieved by meeting low vapor pressure exemptions. Lower VOCs and bio-derived materials are a key focus for sustainability. The testing aimed to explore the application into architectural coatings, after initial success found in Direct-to-Metal industrial coatings.

NXT SOLV 100 is a proprietary Ethyl Levulinate solvent that has low volatility and an excellent EH&S profile. It brings strong solvency across a broad range of organic functionalities with low to no foaming.

NXT SOLV 200 is a proprietary Butyl Levulinate solvent that has low volatility and an excellent EH&S profile. It is non-flammable, non-combustible, non-toxic, non-sensitizing, and superb performance as a degreasing agent.

NXT SOLV 300 is a proprietary ketal ester solvent that has low volatility and meets many low vapour pressure (LPV-VOC) exemptions. It is non-flammable, non-toxic, non-sensitizing, and has an excellent EH&S profile.

  • Tested in accordance with ASTM D4366 for evaluating film hardness through pendulum damping.
  • Samples were applied using a 6-mil gap coater to an aluminum Q-panel, then allowed to cure for 1 and 7 days at ambient conditions (72F, 30% relative humidity)

Block Resistance

  • Tested in accordance with ASTM D4946 for evaluating block resistance of architectural coatings.
  • Samples were applied using a 6-mil gap coater, then allowed to cure for 1 and 7 days at ambient conditions (72F, 30% relative humidity)
  • Specimens were placed face to face for 30 minutes at 50 °C under 1.8 psi.

Minimum Film Formation Temperature

  • Coalescent screening was done for minimum film formation temperature (based on grams of coalescing solvent per gram of latex)
  • This data was used to determine addition levels for testing of fully formulated samples

Conclusions

The NXT LEVVEL solvents were found to be more efficient coalescing solvents for use with an architectural latex emulsion.

As a result, the NXT LEVVEL solvents had the least impact on film hardness, as measured by Koenig Swings and ASTM D4946 for Block Resistance of Architectural Coatings.
