Polyfil® water-washed kaolin products are used to provide physical property improvements such as tensile strength and flex fatigue, allowing formulators to use lower amounts of reinforcing fillers like carbon black. The platy nature of kaolin contributes to creating an effective barrier to gases and vapours. The courser products provide modest tensile improvements and higher flexibility, while the ultrafine products provide the highest reinforcement and durability properties. The ultrafine, high brightness products (Polyfil HG90) are especially good titanium dioxide extenders in white polymeric formulations.
Water Washed Kaolin Grades
- Polyfil 35 – course kaolin, with the lowest oil absorption, for extending without reinforcement, milled powder form.
- Polyfil F – fine grade, water-washed kaolin clays such as Polyfil F offer acid resistance, reinforcement, neutral pH, and extremely low crystalline silica and salt content. This product is a moderate brightness water-washed kaolin. It has higher brightness and offers improved consistency compared to air-floated clays.
- Polyfil FB – fine grade, water-washed kaolin clays such as Polyfil FB offer acid resistance, reinforcement, neutral pH, and extremely low crystalline silica and salt content. This product is a moderate brightness water-washed kaolin. It has higher brightness and offers improved consistency compared to air-floated clays.
- Polyfil HG – this product is an ultra-fine particle size, moderate brightness water-washed kaolin clay. It offers acid resistance, barrier properties, reinforcement, neutral ph, and extremely low crystalline silica and salt content.
- Polyfil HG90 – high brightness, ultra-fine kaolin extender for white or bright colored rubber or plastic, spray-dried bead form.
- Polyfil X – fine grade, cost effective, kaolin extender offering improved consistency vs air floated clays, pulverized powder form.
- Polyfil XB – fine grade, cost effective, kaolin extender offering improved consistency vs air floated clays, spray-dried bead form.
Calcined Kaolin Grades
- Polyfil 70 – moderate particle size calcined clays, such as Polyfil 70, are brighter than most water-washed clays, offering excellent processing and limited reinforcement. They impart outstanding wet/dry electrical properties due to the elimination of bound water during the calcined process. Compounds with calcined clays extrude smoothly and reduce stickiness in processing. Polyfil 70 is a high brightness calcined kaolin clay used to extend elastomeric and thermoplastics products, including wire and cable applications.
- Polyfil 80 – higher brightness, moderate particle size, calcined kaolin.
- Polyfil 90 – highest brightness, fine particle size, calcined kaolin.
Delaminated Kaolin Grades
- Polyfil DL – moderate particle size, platy delaminated clay that reduces gas/vapor permeability, spray-dried bead form.
- Polyfil DLX – course particle size, very high aspect ratio, delaminated clay that reduces gas and vapor permeability. It is a type of water washed clay that is processed to have a high aspect ratio. Large and platy particles provide effective barriers to gases and liquids and help improve gas retention properties in rubber inner liners and other applications. In the delamination process, KaMin processes kaolin particles (stack of platelets, as they are found in nature) into special wet-grinding, attrition mills. The clay stacks are reduced to thin kaolin platelets
Surface Treated Calcined Kaolin Grades
- Polyfil WC – moderate particle size organo-functional calcined kaolin clay used in Wire and Cable and other thermoplastic applications. It is designed to reduce water vapor transmission, yields excellent wet and dry electrical properties, and also long-term stability in EPR and cross-linked polyethylene. Calcined clays have low conductivity due to the elimination of bound water during the calcined process. Compounds with calcined clays extrude smoothly and reduce stickiness in processing.
- Polyfil WC 426 – fine particle size vinyl-functional calcined clay for outstanding wet electricals and long term stability in wire and cable applications.
