Lactose anhydrous high velocity direct tabletting, commonly referred to as lactose DTHV or Sheffield Anhydrous DT High Velocity, has been specifically developed as a faster flowing form of lactose for high-speed direct tabletting operations. It has superior flowability and improved tablet uniformity, while maintaining tablet hardness at low compaction pressures when compared with traditional direct tabletting anhydrous lactose. It also retains the fast disintegration properties of anhydrous lactose. Additional advantages are low friability, improved moisture stability, reduced color development and improved reworking.

Sheffield tabletting systems DTFD and DTHV are designed for use in tablets where a hard tablet with fast dissolution is desired. They are specially processed lactose-based products priced similarly to that of MCC, but with a faster dissolution rate. The tablet hardness and friability are similar to that of pure lactose.

Direct compression demands the use of excipients with strictly defined properties. Kerry has created excipients specifically to meet the requirements of the direct compression process: Sheffield™ Brand Anhydrous Lactose, N.F.-Direct tableting, and N.F.-Direct tableting High Velocity. The originally patented formulation, commonly referred to as Anhydrous DT, is one of the most outstanding and unique direct compression excipients available. Several other grades are now available to optimize tableting performance including Sheffield Anhydrous DT High Velocity, which has the same superior tableting properties as Sheffield Anhydrous DT but with exceptional flow.

Compaction Properties of Sheffield Anhydrous DT High Velocity

Tablet hardness versus compaction force profiles for lactose formulas are shown in the below figures. Relative to other high flowing directly compressible products Analysis of the data concluded that Sheffield™ Brand Anhydrous DTHV forms harder tablets at lower compaction forces relative to other high flowing directly compressible products. Lower ejection force profiles are desirable because they not only save energy, but also result in less wear on tablet press dies and less equipment maintenance.
