While sun exposure and melanin are primarily responsible for tanned skin, the causes of uneven pigmentation are more diverse. Physiological factors such as age or hormonal balance can be factors, but a common thread is melanogenesis. The amino acid tyrosine is metabolized into melanin under the influence of several enzymes, most importantly the tyrosinase. The melanin is then transported to the skin surface by melanocytes in the form of melanosomes. Their mixture ratio (eumelanin/phaeomelanin) is crucial for skin tone.
